Description
19th Century Secrétaire Bookcase Neoclassical Style Egyptian Revival * English 19th Century * Neoclassical Style Egyptian Revival * Mahogany veneers – later painted Scandi Blue * Astragal Mouldings to glazed upper section * In 2 sections for ease of movement/transportation * Raised on 4 shaped bun feet This is such a delightful and fascinating piece of furniture; this Secrétaire bookcase is a wonderful blend of Neoclassical and Egyptian influences. The side columns are adorned with plaster cast and hand painted mounts taking the form of Egyptian pharaoh heads and terminate in human feet. The Bookcase section forms the upper part and has a fixed moulded cornice and has an open area with 2 adjustable shelves behind 2 Astragal glazed doors. The lower section is made up of a large Secrétaire section which takes the form in appearance of two drawers externally. When opened up this section reveals a pigeon hole to either side with a set of three drawers; centrally there is a large open area between these drawers with a longer drawer above to bridge the space between. The drop front Secrétaire mechanism ensures that there is no need for lopers and there is ample space for the perusal of documents and writing notes or letters – or indeed the use of a laptop. Below the base Secrétaire section is a cupboard with 2 doors which opens to reveal a generous space with a fixed shelf. The bookcase together with the Secrétaire section and cupboard of the lower section provides a surfeit of storage for books, manuscripts or other valuable items. The Egyptian Revival style was popular during the 19th century, especially after the discovery of ancient Egyptian artifacts and the opening of the Suez Canal in November 1869. People were fascinated by the mystique and grandeur of ancient Egypt, leading to the incorporation of Egyptian motifs in various art forms, including furniture.
