Description
Hall marked silver Hms Invincible commemorative medal mounted in a broach setting to rotate to reveal both sides. Presented in a wood box with a glass viewer. One side of the medal shows a lion sitting on a cliff top with the words Hms Invincible and a sailing ship on the horizon, a reference to Hms Invincible captured by the Royal Navy in 1747. The motto “Vincit amor patriae” or “Love of country conquers” The reverse side shows Hms Invincible. Launched in 1907 was the lead ship of her class of battle cruisers and saw action during the Battle of the Falkland Islands when she helped sink the German cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. She was sunk at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 following a magazine explosion. Hall marks are for Birmingham 1910 and the makers mark Wilmot Manufacturing Co. The medal is presented in a laburnum box with a screw top lid with a magnifying glass viewer and was retailed by The Welham Co “Medalists” of London
