Description
Extremely rare George I Malacca wood and 18ct gold walking stick or cane that dates to c1720. The pommel is not hallmarked but as you can see in the pictures has been gun tested as 18ct gold. 18ct cylindrical pommel with a slight mushroom top has just one ring as decoration. The top is has some worn engraved decoration around the edge with a lion to the centre sitting on a cushion wearing a coronet. This is the crest of the Fitzroy family, the coronet on the lion indicates that the owner of the stick was a Baron or Duke. I'm sure more can be ascertained with further research. Wrist strap eyelets are on either side below the pommel. These are gold plated as 18ct wouldn't stand the wear of the strap. Mounted on a Malacca shaft with it's original brass and steel ferrule to the base. The grade one Malacca shaft is excellent with no damage or repairs. Being a fibrous wood it's strong but light weight. Truly remarkable for a cane of this age. Please contact us with any questions you may have.
measurements
It measures 89.4 cm 35 1/8 inches in length, the pommel is 3.2 cm 1 1/4 inches wide and 2 inches 5.1 cm long.
declaration
Shires Antiques has clarified that the Rare 1720 George I Walking Stick Cane 18ct Gold Top Malacca Shaft Fitzroy Crest (LA489666) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being c.1720
condition
It's in excellent condition but with some minor signs of age and use as you'd expect at 300 years old. A split in the seam line between the top and sides of the pommel, not unusual in 18 carat gold with it being such a soft metal. Professionally stabilised is that it won't deteriorate. Minor surface marks on the gold but no holes or repairs. Amazing when you think how soft 18ct gold is.
