Description
We present for consideration, this excellent fusee wall timepiece with 12” dial, by regional clockmaker, watchmaker, and silversmith John Whitehead, of High Street, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, where this clock would have been made. Whitehead was born in 1835 at Stamford, Lincs, and by 1861, was living at Church Street, Market Harborough. Moving to High Street, c1875, he remained in the town throughout his professional life until his retirement c1900, when he moved to Borthwick Road, Boscombe, Bournemouth, Dorset, with wife Elizabeth. Whitehead later passed away in Bournemouth, 1915. **Nb: An interesting footnote to this family. In June 1867 Whitehead married Elizabeth Aldwinkle, who went on to assist John in their High Street, Market Harborough shop. Elizabeth was born in the town on 30 Aug 1844 and on 22 Dec 1951, she officially became the oldest living British person until her death in Bournemouth on 5 March 1953. She lived for 108 years and 187 days and an image of Elizabeth on her 107th birthday, comes with the clock!** The clock has a turned mahogany roundhead face, sitting over its boxed cabinet. There is a hinged inspection door located to the side of the box and an operable lockable regulator door located at the bottom of the box. The clock retains its original metal dial and artwork, with black Roman numerals and Whitehead’s details, finished with its original pair of blued Heavy Double Swell Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is then protected by glaze mounted in a brass bezel. The clock benefits from a quality 8-day single fusee movement set between rectangular plates and turned pillars, (the front plate being stamped with the makers Trademark and serial number “2454”) and comes with its original 67mm diameter brass pendulum bob and a brass winding key.
