1918 Military Floating Dial Compass, Francis Mfg Co. No. 4460, Mahogany Case

A very interesting wooden cased pocket compass, with floating type dial, made by the Francis Mfg. Co. and dated 1918 underneath the case, along with the serial number 4460. There is also an impressed military broad arrow to the lower right hand side of the rear casing. It has a rotating dial with two series of numerals for angle calculation. There is a locking piece to lock the dial when the case is closed. This compass seems to be in good condition for its age and in working order. The glass seems clear and unscratched. There is one brown age mark to the outer dial. The front catch closure pin appears to be missing. The case measures about 3 inches (8.7 cm) square. Height about 1 inch (2.5 cm). A well preserved and attractive artefact from the great war, ideal for any collector of militaria, directional compasses, or scientific instruments.
