Description
An outstanding free standing oak bureau/cupboard. I'm pretty certain this was made by Arthur Romney Green. One can see the influence of Ernest Gimson and the Barnsleys who started this evolution of furniture in the arts and crafts field known as Cotswold School. All handmade. The through tenon/wedge inside the bureau making up the letter/paper racks/shelves are literally almost a millimetre. Its precision engineering in wood. The piece has a fold down flap to be used as a desk housing the interior to be used as a bureau. The two doors open and this space can be used for storage. This is an early piece. The construction, honesty to workmanship, oak used (probably locally sourced ) is a testament to an incredible man at the top of his game/profession. There is a decent book on A.R.Green which I would recommend to anyone interested. This was in the same family for 80 years. One can see a mathematical mind at work in wood by a truly remarkable gentleman carpenter (master craftsman).
