Description
A good aneroid pocket barometer altimeter by J.H. Steward, London No 5556 c1925. Pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered and die struck dial, the outer altimetric bezel driven scale calibrated in feet with a range from -1000ft – 8,000ft and divided down to 100ft, the inner barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 22” – 31” and divided down to 1/20th. The inner part marked with various weather prognostications, the lower part signed by the maker “J.H. Steward Ltd, 406 & 457 Strand, London” and serial no. “5556.” Blued steel pointer under bevelled glass. Standard configuration movement driven from a single nickel alloy 1” capsule tensioned on a C spring. All contained within a brass ribbed drum form case with engine turned finishers, pendant and bow, calibration port to verso. Small inscribed inventory number to verso. Presented in its correct brown leather over timber, royal blue velvet and silk lined case, snap closure on a button release. Condition: The subject of a full service, conservation, and calibration under laboratory conditions, see performance chart from dynamic test. The movement working well with an easily acceptable level of accuracy. Some slight deterioration to silvering at dial centre, otherwise crisp and clean. The brass case retaining much original lacquered finish. The leather case structurally sound with good external shine, the fabric interior sound with good colour and vibrancy. Comments: One of the very best makers known for quality and accuracy, and very often the choice of professionals of the era. In much above average condition and very collectable.
