Stunning Quality Antique Vitrine Cabinet By Gervais-Maximilien-Eugene-Durand
This is a wonderful French 19th Century antique marquetry and ormolu mounted vitrine cabinet by Gervais-Maximilen-Eugene-Durand. cabinet with floral inlaid marquetry panels. with a breche d'alep marble top. High corners with lovely ormolu mounts of scrolled acanthus leaves and flowers. Above and below the central panel is embellished with ormolu mounts of shell and acanthus leaves. The serpentine sides also with floral inlaid marquetry panels surrounded with ormolu borders. cabinet front open with a single door to reveal an interior of two adjustable glass shelves. The cabinet have three glass panels to the front and two serpentine glass side panels. cabinet stood on solid cabriole legs finished with ormolu feet. cabinet stamped G . Durand to the back.
Gervais-Maximilen-Eugene-Durand established the Maison Durand firm in 1870, producing top quality 18th century style furniture. The business triumphed when the firm participated in the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle, obtaining a silver medal and commended as 'un ebenistesaussi habile que modeste, qui expose por la premiere fois les muebles de premeire ordre, dont il est a la fois le dessinateur et l'executant ; il marche sure la voie tracee par les maitres tel que Beurdeley et Dasson. In 1890 Durands son Frederic-Louis joined the firm and the name was changed to Durand & Fils. The firm was located at 12 Rue de la Cerisaie, Paris but subsequently moved in 1900 to 62 Rue Saint Antoine, previously the hotel de Sully.
