Description
Sumptuously coloured, tall flambe glazed vase by Bernard Moore, decorated by Hilde Carter c1910. The vase is of inverted baluster form with flared foot and collar neck. Decorated in the round with sprigs of cherry blossom on a near black ground - appearing as deep bronze in different light. Band of geometric design around the neck. Painted Bernard Moore mark to base and artist's monogram for Hilda Carter. After the closure of the family firm of Moore Bros. in 1905, Bernard Moore (1850-1935) set up his own kilns and decorating workshop at Wolfe Street, Stoke-on-Trent. Prior to this he was already a highly respected glaze chemist and a consultant to the ceramics industry on a wide variety of technical issues. In 1902 he was elected president of the British Ceramic Society. Throughout the 1880s and 1890s it is likely that he was experimenting with and perfecting the specialist and difficult glazes with which his name is now principally associated. The firm at Wolfe Street specialised in the production of pottery with flambé glazes and reduced lustre pigments. Moore employed a number of leading ceramic artists including Richard Joyce, John Adams and Hilda Carter amongst many others. Moore closed the business at Wolfe Street in 1915 but continued to work as a ceramic consultant.
