Offered for sale is this original watercolour attributed to Royal Academy Artist William Collins (1788-1847).
Collins was an acclaimed artist and member of the Royal Academy with several exhibits at the Royal Academy. He was a contemporary fellow artist of Constable and Turner whose financial value he at times succeeded.
This watercolour sketch possibly depicts a Norfolk Coastal Scene made during his 1815 sketching tour of the Norfolk Coast. There is a very interesting caption on the reverse of the frame:
From the collection of Mr. J. Erxleben, who was for 50 years associated with Professor Sir Richard Owen, as his draughtsman and lithographer, and was a lifelong intimate friend of the late Louis Hughe P.R.I.
Erxleben was a renown Dutch/German Victorian lithographer and did numerous works as a draughtsman and lithographer for the anatomist and palaeontologist Richard Owen (1804-1892) who was a good friend of Charles Darwin.
