I specialise in affordable original artworks - mainly traditional watercolours and oil paintings but I also have a range of contemporary artworks which are mostly limited edition lithographic prints. I also stock a limited selection of antiques and collectables, including silver, ceramics and glass. I have a shop in Abingdon on Thames, about 5 miles from Oxford, which is open by appointment but my business is mostly online. My website has a gallery section with several mini-galleries where most of my items are shown.

Description

This engraving dates from the time of the Napoleonic Wars, before the decisive battle of Austerlitz, and describes a military funeral of a serving soldier. The illustration is very fine, in unfaded colours, showing the detailed military uniforms of the time. A note, verso, suggests this print was owned by a Captain G Babington.

John Mayne was a Scottish printer, journalist and poet, born in Dumfries 1759 and died 1836. He was admired by Sir Walter Scott and his poem 'Halloween' supposedly inspired Robert Burns to write his own Halloween poem. Mayne contributed poems to Ruddimans Weekly Magazine in Edinburgh from 1777. He moved to London in 1787 and became printer, editor and joint owner of 'The Star' evening paper, where he published some of his own work, and also contributed to the Gentlemen's Magazine, which published 'The Muffled Drum' in October 1805. I am not sure whether this example comes from this magazine or who was responsible for the rather fine illustration. The publishers were Laurie and Whittle, well known for ballads etc.
