Full set of twelve framed engravings of apples in English oak frames. Colouring is original from 1758 as sold as the book was available coloured or plain.This is possibly the only full set to be available for sale for many many decades. The images are from JOHANN HERMANN KNOOP 'Pomologia, dat is Beschryvingen en Afbeeldingen van de beste soorten van Appels en Peeren, welke in Neder- en Hoog-Duitsland, Frankryk, Engelland en elders geagt zyn, en tot dien einde gecultiveerd worden,' hand-coloured engraved plates' Size folio 350 x 250mm. Published in Leeuwarden by Abraham Ferwerda [& Gerrit Tresling], 1758-1763 folds on the page are as issued. Knoop was head gardener to the Dowager Princess of Orange at Marienburg, near Leeuwarden. The work describes apples and pears, the first monographs with colored plates of fruit and fruit trees' and the Pololgia became the most popular treatise on pomology in the 18th Century. The set has 103 apple varieties depicted and 125 'races' of apples.
