Description

This wonderful engraving, full of fantastic details, was originally engraved by Hogarth under the title Enthusiasm Delineated, and its central subject was the extravagance of Methodist preaching, but the print add to that satire on all kinds of fanatical religious tendencies. Hogarth never published the original print, but reworked the engraving, and this print, published in 1762, was the result.

The detail of the subject matter is too complex to explain briefly - A commentary can be found in Paulson, Hogarth's Graphic Works, 1989, pages 177/178 (the print is Paulson 210A). Without the need to understand the full detail the print is amazing is its imagery and skill. It is one of Hogarth's late works (he died in 1764), and shows his full maturity of style.

The print is from the 1837 of Hogarth prints, the last edition to use the original plates of Hogarth. It is an excellent impression.

Will be sent mounted and flat.
