A superb engraving by Hans Otto Schönleber, an expressionist artist of the Stuttgart School. Schönleber engraved a series of four views of the temple at Agrigento in Scility, towards the end of his life. This plate is monogrammed bottom right and dated 1926. The print is also signed in pencil by the artist lower left, entitled Grigenti II and marked "Original kupferstich" (original engraving) in Schönleber's idiosyncratic hand.

A remarkable German engraver and woodcut artist, Hans Otto Schönleber was the son of the landscape painter, Gustav Schonleber. Despite his artistic heritage, Hans Schonleber first chose medicine as his career and served as a doctor on the Western Front during the First World War (1914-1918). The horrors he experienced during this most brutal of wars had a lasting affect upon him and shortly thereafter he abandoned medicine in favour of painting and printmaking.

From 1920 Schönleber's engravings and woodcuts were regularly exhibited in major German and Austrian exhibitions. He created some fine figure studies and portraits but became most famous for his strong landscape depictions. "Girgenti II". His engravings and woodcuts are post-Expressionist, but are also sometimes noted for harking back to early German topographical landscape drawing. Many scholars claim Schönleber's engraved art as a major influence on the landscape prints of M. C. Escher.

In this superb landscape Schönleber depicts the famous ancient ruins of Agrigentum in the background. They are located in the province of Girgenti (also called, Agrigento) in the south-west of Sicily. The ruins, however, are but one element of this haunting image of land and sky.
