Description

J.H. GILLESPIE (1793-c.1838) Portrait Miniature Silhouette.
Trade label Number 2

A delightful silhouette, c1815 of a young girl, wearing a necklace and low-cut dress. It has provenance from the important Andrew Ransford collection and bears the artist’s trade label number two. It sold at the Bonham’s fine miniature collection 24th November 1999, lot 227, for a hammer price of £280, including premium about £350 ($440)

Foskett states that Gillespie was in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1829, in Baltimore in 1837, in Philadelphia in 1838 and that he visited New York. Gillespie, therefore, on the available evidence, appears w have worked in England 1810 - c. 1820, and then in North America as late as 1838.

Two trade labels are known. They carry the same wording, but neither have an address. It would seem probable that Gillespie was an itinerant painter travelling from town to town and country to country.

The card is a toned but generally in very good order.
