Description

Circle of Louis Léopold BOILLY (1761-1845)

A finely painted portrait of a characterful woman, dating to the 1820s and in the style of Leopold Boilly. French in origin, presented in a period frame and bearing a label for a Parisian framer. The portrait can be dated by means of this label to between 1802 and 1834. Boilly is known to have been painting in Paris during this period. It is the same size as many of his portraits, unsigned and closely resembles his work. He is thought to have painted over 5000 portraits.

Louis-Léopold Boilly was a French painter and draftsman. A gifted creator of popular portrait paintings, he also produced a vast number of genre paintings vividly documenting French middle-class social life. His life and work spanned the eras of monarchical France, the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Empire, the Bourbon Restoration and the July Monarchy.

At the height of the revolutionary Terror in 1794, Boilly was condemned by the Committee of Public Safety for the erotic undertones of his work (difficult to see this in this particular portrait). This offence was remedied by an eleventh-hour discovery in his home of the more patriotic Triumph of Marat (now in the Musée des Beaux Arts, Lille) which saved him from serious penalties.
