Description

This is a very rare second state of this print. The first existing state is before title publication details and text in print, and therefore clearly pre-publication. This is the second state, with all letters complete. There is a third state where the only additionn is a shadow between the dresses of the two central ladies, and the fourth state is that published by Boydell etc after Hogarth's death, which has substantial extra cross hatching.

This is therefore one of the prints issued by Hogarth to Subscribers in 1745 for the price of one guinea, or one of the later copies sold for one and a half guineas (no cheaper version being produced). The print is on stout French laid paper which corroborates this.

Marriage A-La-Mode was a grand scheme devised by Hogarth, which commenced with his paintings of the six scenes, representing "a Variety of Modern Occurrences in High-Life". The painting are now in the National Gallery in London. They were complete in 1743, and as early as that Hogarth was advertising the prints, to be engraved by the best masters in Paris. Although Hogarth was himself an engraver, he travelled to Paris in May 1743, partly to secure the services of the French engravers, including Bernard Baron.

The is one of the most engaging of all those in the series, and shows the wife in her boudoir, now neglecting her children and husbands and engaging in frivolous banter with hangers-on. For further detail on the states of the prints and of the background and subject matter, see Paulson, Hogarth's Graphic Works, 1989, pages 117-123 (Paulson 161).
