Description

This is a lovely atmospheric antique watercolour of the interior of Westminster Abbey, specifically St Edward the Confessor's shrine. Edward was king of England in the mid 11th century and began the rebuilding of the Abbey church to provide a royal burial place. He was considered a saint and was canonised in the 12th century.

This painting is dated 1901 and has the monogram "AD" lower right. However on the back of the painting itself it bears the signature "Alice Dashwood" and identifies the subject as Edward the Confessor's shrine.
