A very rare late 19th century gilt brass aneroid pocket barometer altimeter by Antoine Redier, Paris.Pocket barometer having 1⅜' enamelled dial, the upper portion annotated in standard meteorological terms 'Stormy, Rain, Change, Fair' and 'Very Dry.' The outer barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 22 – 31, the inner scale calibrated in feet with a range from 0 – 10,000. Signed with the maker’s monogram 'ARED' and marked 'Aneroid Barometer.' Bevelled glass set within a rotating bezel with index. High quality, typical French pattern single capsule driven rack and pinion movement. Housed within a ribbed drum form case with engine turned ribs, extension pillar and bow, the verso with compensation adjustment port and screw. The whole contained within its original imperial purple velvet and navy blue silk lined, grained leather over wood case, snap closure on a button release.Pocket barometers by Antoine Redier are certainly rare. On occasion when they are found, the dials are nearly always damaged, the enamelling is very fragile due to the fine gauge of the brass backing material. The subject of a complete service and calibration to full scale deflection, working well with good sensitivity. The case retaining some original gilt finish, the leather case with minor marks and impressions, good colour and gloss. The fabric interior remaining clean and vibrant.A really unusual pocket barometer in very crisp original condition overall. Very much for the collector.
