Solid mahogany apothecary box in fine condition. Believed to have been made during the early-mid Victorian period. Measures approximately 8” x 3 ½” x 7 ½”. Unspoilt patina. No missing mahogany. No shrinkage splits. Original inlaid brass escutcheon and handle to the front drawer. Top and drawer close square with the latter accessed by removing a replacement brass locking rod located to the box interior. Original hinges and lock. The key is for decorative purposes only but the lock mechanism has been tested and is in working condition. The lid opens to reveal the original velvet lining throughout complete with all of the original dividers. The three bottles are I believe original. One of the bottles has a small chip on the stopper and on the upper rim otherwise they are in very good condition. I must add that the two stoppers on the large bottles are ‘stuck’ in position. Hopefully a good soaking will loosen them but that is a job best left for the buyer as I tend to be too heavy handed!!! The drawer lining is once again complete with all of the original dividers and velvet lining throughout. The third tiny glass bottle is in very good condition with a nicely fitting original stopper.
Apothecary and homeopathic boxes have seen an increase in demand over the past few years and those in good condition complete with the original lining/dividers are becoming increasingly difficult to source. A nice example of the style.
