Description

This is a beautifully Black Forest carved box originating from Switzerland - for many years, Black Forest carvings were believed to have been made in the Black Forest region of Bavaria in Germany - more recent research has proven that these carving were in fact made in Switzerland.

I believe the wood used on this item is lime, but of course it could be another timber with a similar grain.

Given the subject matter of this box its fairly self explanatory as to where it comes from as there are edelweiss flowers carved to the lid - the edelweiss is an alpine flower found in Switzerland, Austria, Bulgaria and Romania.

The box itself is completely relief hand carved to every side except the underside - it has been designed to look like an old fashioned string tied parcel - the lid has little carved knot and string pattern goes down each of the 4 side.

The lid also has the Swiss edelweiss flower and another alpine flower - the front lock side and the short ends also have carved flowers motifs.

The back side of the box is much more sparsely decorated (probably because it wouldn't be seen as much) and just has simple line work decoration.

The lid is hinged and when opened it reveals the original turquoise / blue silk lining to the base and the inside of the lid. Because the item has such a decorative lining its purpose was almost certainly that of a jewellery or trinket box.

The box does come with its original key, it does turn in the lock, but as with many locks on antique boxes the locking mechanism no longer operates.

Looking at the quality of the carving, the wear, overall patina and the style of lining the box will date from around 1910 to 1920.

The box measures 18.6cm wide and is 10.1cm front to back - the height is 7.2cm - the total unpacked weight is 387.4g.

Declaration

Century Antiques has clarified that the Swiss Black Forest carved edelweiss jewellery / trinket box (CA2070 / LA153176) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1915.

Condition

The condition of the piece all round is excellent - the wood has a golden honey colour with a very fine patina that has built up from years of handling and cleaning. There are no splits, chips, dents or other damage to the piece - as mentioned above, the original lock no longer operates, which in my experience isn't unusual in boxes of this age. The silk lining is a little dusty in places and has some darker staining near the lock plate, probably where it has been glued in place. Overall it's in very collectable and usable condition and would grace any home.
