Mid Victorian brass edge bound writing box in fine condition. Measures approximately 14” x 9” x 6”. Unspoilt patina. Original inlaid brass escutcheon, cartouche, edge trim and subtle inlay strips all original and in excellent condition. One very small and thin piece of replaced veneer at the back bottom corner of the right side that certainly does little to detract from the item. The top closes square and true. Hinges, sliding slope clasp and lock in very good condition with a working key supplied. The office section comprises of the original dished pen tray with storage space beneath, stamp slope and inkwell section complete with what is quite possibly the original inkwell in what appears to be unused condition. The box has had a replacement leather fitted that has both blind and gilt embossed features. I believe the leather was replaced a fair few years ago as it is split along the central fold line. This is extremely common as the fold is the only area of the leather that is exposed to the elements when the box is shut. More importantly, the edges of the split are crisp and even and the fold lines of the leather where the two boards are attached to the box carcass are FULLY intact therefore ensuring that the boards remain in position when accessing the two storage sections both of which are in extremely clean condition. A nice example of the style of box.
