Description

Clearly a quality item. The box features a brass plate to the interior clearly making reference to Tahan, Boul des Italians’. Tahan was a renowned cabinet maker and the official cabinet maker to Napoloeon III. The company was known to have premises at the Boulevard des Italians in Paris. The box came complete with a vintage postcard depicting the area during what looks to be the late Victorian – Edwardian period.
Measures approximately 13 ¼” x 10 ½” x 4” (4” at the back sloping to 2” at the front). Brass edge bound to the rear lid and front sloping lid. Both lids feature an ebonised border, subtle inlaid brass strips surrounding a band of kingwood, a further thin ebonised strip and a large panel of what is believed to be maple. The condition of the veneers and inlays are extremely good and all complete. Ornate inlaid cartouche with equally ornate veneer surround in excellent condition. The cartouche is engraved with ‘token of esteem to Miss Elizabeth Allen’ and dated 6th June 1872. All veneer to the sides and back in common with the lids are complete, original and in very fine condition. The sloping lid is slightly bowed as is frequently the case with slope fronted writing boxes but as can be seen from the photographs it detracts little from what is a most attractive item.
The lids open to reveal an impressive interior. Original lock and hinges (key for decorative purposes only). The office section comprises of the usual two inkpot sections and central lidded section with a box width storage space to the front. The box has the bonus of featuring the original embossed velvet surface. It is of course worn and is light faded along the fold lines….this is perfectly normal. The considerable benefit with this writing box over the vast majority of slope fronted writing boxes made in Great Britain is the clever design of the hinges. They are double hinged and in effect ensures that the upper section remains firmly attached to the box carcass regardless of any wear to the material on the slope surface. To my knowledge the hinges were used exclusively in France. The velvet could of course be replaced but in this case I believe it would devalue the item. The storage area beneath the writing platform is in superb condition.
To complete the item a matching pair of brass screw top inkwells, a stick of sealing wax and a dip nib pen with spare nibs has been added.
A fine example of the style.
