Description

A Worcester First Period sugar or small slop bowl, the exterior press moulded with 24 concave flutes, hand-painted in underglaze blue with the 'Fruit Sprays' pattern (ref. Branyon, French & Sandon, I. E14).

The interior base decorated with a central sprig and double blue line, the interior rim with hand painted border No. 7 and with border No, 8 painted just above the foot rim.

Whilst the 'Fruit Sprays' pattern is regarded by Branyon, French and Sandon as 'not uncommon' in plain thrown teawares, they point out that this pattern was also applied to 'a more unusual group of press-moulded, fluted teawares' (page 238) of which this is a very fine example.

This piece is unmarked but is unquestionably Worcester.
