Description

18th Century soft paste Liverpool porcelain slop bowl, transfer printed in underglaze blue with a pattern of floral sprays and sprigs, the inner rim decorated with a cell and fleur de lis border.
Two examples of this pattern are illustrated in Bernard Whatney, 'Liverpool Porcelain', on two near identical moulded sauce boats, one made by Philip Christian and the other by Seth Pennington (figs 144 & 425). Whatney describes the pattern used by Pennington as 'flower sprays similar if not identical to those used by Philip Christian' (Whatney, p. 106).
