Description

Offered for sale is this 19th Century antique Staffordshire Crimean War Fairing.

NB. This is the figure illustrated on page 22 of the Shire Guide to Staffordshire Figures by Frances Bryant.

The figure depicts a young girl carrying a flag and drum and represents fair performers who marched through towns in order to drum up recruits for the war.

The figure is a fairing and would have been given as a prize to encourage patriotic sentiment. It has been hand painted in overglaze enamels.

Declaration

Wessex House Antiques has clarified that the Staffordshire Crimean War Fairing (GT/De/452/37 / LA129115) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1855.

Condition

The girl's nose has been retouched, and there are some minor firing cracks which were made during manufacture and have always been present. There is a good painter's mark to the base. Please inspect the photographs closely to assess the condition and quality of this rare survivor.
