Description

An unusual continental porcelain inkwell. This is in the form of a bird of prey sitting on top of a globe, above 3 sea serpents whose open mouths form quill holders. The ink reservoir (in the form of a shell) receives the ink which is poured into a hole in the top of the bird.

Declaration

Heath Lane Antiques has clarified that the Rare Porcelain Inkwell with Bird of Prey On a Globe (949 / LA163651) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1800.

Condition

In reasonable overall condition for its age, this inkwell has undergone restoration, including a replacement or re-attached piece which now forms one of two water holders. There has been restoration, somewhat crude, also to the wing tips, one of which has some loss to overall length. Also the beak tip appears to have received attention. There has been some loss of colour + glaze in some areas.
