Description

This charming figurine was designed to function as a spill holder, the boy's fishing net being the receptacle for spills. The young boy sits on a rock, balancing his fishing net and holding a knife with which he is about to shuck an oyster in his right hand.

The figure is 31 cm (12 inches) tall. It is made in a pale coloured terracotta which is cold painted (ie after initial firing). Production of these figures was predominantly in Austria, famous producers being Goldscheider and Johann Maresch, around the turn of the 20th century.

This piece is stamped BU 789. We have found other examples of cold painted terracotta similarly stamped (same initials, different number), but have not identified the maker.

Declaration

Chester's Farm Antiques has clarified that the Austrian cold painted terracotta oyster fisher boy (1519572172 / LA157620) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1900.

Condition

Condition is generally good with overall light wear to the paint but no chips, cracks or restoration which we have identified. We do note the the figure's left hand does not appear to as realistically modelled as the right one, but we have examined it closely and we cannot see that it is a re-modelling.
