Description

The artist and designer John Moyr Smith created a number of tiles for the Art Pottery firm of Minton. These tiles were transfer printed and widely used. Today the printed tiles are very collectable.

This set of four tiles are not however printed but hand painted in enamels on Minton blanks. They are after Moyr Smith's designs for the series Idylls of the King, based on Tennyson's Arthurian poem, which was a 12 -tile series.

The painting is very close to the design for the printed tiles, with some minor differences.

We have not seen comparable items apart from two other sets of four tiles which we bought at the same time as these. We think it likely that these tiles were painted in the Kensington Gore Art pottery studio which Minton ran from about 1870 to 1875. Whether they were a specific commission or an examination piece, possibly a special commission or an examination piece.

Moyr Smith (1839-1912) was a key figure in the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain, and had a particular interest in drawing based on classical and mythical historicism.

A rare and attractive example of Arts and Crafts English design.
