Antique Tramp Folk Art ‘Crown of Thorns’ Miniature Throne / Chair
Ref: t.0418 / LA95329
Tramp art is a form of folk art which flourished from around 1870 until the late 1930’s. Artists typically whittled geometric, notched shapes from old cigar boxes and shipping crates; often using only a simple pocket knife. These pieces of wood were often layered to create a pyramidal design or alternatively, numerous small interlocking pieces were used to create the ‘crown of thorns’ design, shown here. The ‘crown of thorns’ design used no glue or pins but simply relied upon the interlocking nature of the small pieces of notched wood to support the construction. Finished items were often sealed with a linseed oil and turpentine mix.
I have seen smaller more simplistic ‘crown of thorns’ chairs but with its curved arm rests and detailed construction, this example is one of the nicest and most intricate I have seen. There appears to be no losses or damage and the item displays very well indeed. Likely to be European in origin, circa late 19th century, (possibly early 20th century).
Measures; 12 ½ inches tall, 7 inches depth and 8 inches across at widest point.
