Its always been a passion for me the Arts and Crafts movement and I got interested 15 years ago .My intention is to buy and sell items from this period and including Art nouveau, some art deco and some Modernism and retro pieces together with anything associated with the movement like the Cotswold school.

Description

A stylish Arts and Crafts armchair. Certainly in the manner of Ambrose Heal but also with a strong Voysey feel to the chair .The bottom of the feet are slightly chamfered and the two front legs change shape from straight to octagonal. The arm rest fronts are slightly rounded. The chair is held together using pegs/dowels which was the traditional method on chairs throughout the centuries. The back of the chair has through tenons which is very unusual.

Clearly this chair does have all the hallmarks of the Cotswold school. Yet it still remains modern looking and stylish. The carved cuts out are crude and the way the wood has been cut and finished is not in keeping with the true ideas of the Cotswold school. The wood described as Teak when I bought it but I am 50/50 its not fumed oak using ammonia which would tie in with the Ambrose Heal feel of this chair.

There were many manufacturers who made furniture for Heal & Co and sadly a few who plagiarized and copied their unique style.

Measurements

Height : 93 cm - 36.61 in

Width : 53.5 cm - 21.06 in

Depth : 58 cm - 22.83 in

The chair is 612mm wide across the arms and 535mm internally.
The depth is 52cm for a cushion and 48cm wide internally.

Declaration

artsncraftsfurniture has clarified that the Ambrose Heal (Manner Of) Arts & Crafts Armchair (Ambrose Heal / LA71245) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being Arts & Crafts.

Condition

Overall in good condition .Some small signs of ware and tear. The back of the chair had another two hinges as well as the one still attached. Where I placed a piece of paper a strip approx 10mm wide has been added as there was evidence of damage where the back had been pulled or snapped off. Also at the very back of the chair across the horizontal frame there was a split that has been reglued and is not noticeable but I need to elucidate any repairs. I have not fixed the back piece on to the frame using the attached hinge. The frame of the chair is structurally sound. I've come across many of these style of chairs and this one stands out .
