This is a good set of genuine French antique chairs that are ready to go straight into your home.
When compared to their English counterparts, there does not appear to be a great difference between the dining chairs of our Victorian period and their Gallic equivalent, but there are subtle details that make them unmistakably French. The slightly elongated nature of the curving back rail, the centre splat which is raised in the middle and the turnings of the front legs which have three ridges finishing in a ball at the base, are all features of French design that are not seen over here.
Made from sycamore, they have a pleasing light brown colour with an original patina that polishes up well, and although they do flex a little, all the joints are firm and solid. The serpentine fronted seats are firmly upholstered in a large patterned floral tapestry material in a subdued oatmeal colour. They all have a nice smooth dome shape with no sag, and the material is in remarkably good condition with no marks, stains or fraying, secured with decorative studs.
There are very few marks on the frames although there are a few minor dinks here and there, but nothing that is detrimental. The turning on front stretcher of one of the chairs (see detailed picture) shows slight signs of wear on the top, where over the years, perhaps a young child has rested their feet on it, but over time this has been well polished and blends with the rest of the chair and almost unnoticeable.
All in all, these are a good set of country chairs, ideal positioned around an antique farmhouse table.
