Although originally made in sets for use as dining chairs this single magnificent piece of furniture demonstrates the art and skill of early furniture makers and nowadays is equally at home when used as a stand-alone statement piece in a hallway. The design harks back to the mid seventeenth century, which was later to undergo a small revival in the mid nineteenth century, and this Victorian copy does not cut corners when compared the original. Made entirely in oak, it features all the traditional elements of its earlier counterpart, the high back, the two carved winged cherubs, the leaves and twisting vines, the bunches of grapes not to mention the barley twist turnings of the back supports, legs and stretchers.
As this is not as old as the seventeenth century examples the oak has not naturally darkened to the extent that they may have, but instead we have a lovely warm chestnut brown that along with its natural patina, waxes to a pleasant shine. The arched backrest panel and seat are covered in an appropriate floral tapestry finished off with close fitting, brass dome headed nails, while to the rear, the back panel is inset with black velvet. The springing of the seat is good and forms a nice smooth dome whilst the hessian underneath shows no sign of sagging. It must be said that there is some evidence of worm in the stave when viewed from the back (see detailed picture) along with isolated holes here and there, but there’s not too many to raise concern, but just to be on the safe side all have been treated with commercial fluid.
