Description

A classic example of a mid-Victorian chest of drawers, recently stripped and waxed, featuring 2 short drawers over 2 long ones. It retains its original wooden knobs, original backboards and turned feet. The drawers have dovetail joints (see photo)

The chest is not without its blemishes, with evidence of historic woodworm activity on the top surface - towards the back and another shorter section at the front (see detailed photos). There is also a small section of old worm activity on one of the drawer fronts (lower right) and also on one of the feet. That said, it hasn't been active for some time and anyway, the whole chest has been immersed in a solution of caustic soda and water during the stripping process, which impregnates into the wood and kills off any worm present.

As you can see from the photos, there is some colour variation in the pine on the top of the chest, (see photo) but inside the drawers are clean and open and close with ease. A knot has dropped out of one of the drawer liners (top left hand drawer) although its no more that 3cm in diameter.

All in all, this is a good roomy chest with a nice colour and with a price reflecting its blemishes.
