Description

This is a pair of late Georgian 'Bristol' blue hand-blown spirit case decanters dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1810.

The decanters are in excellent condition for their age. This means, of course, that they show age related wear and tear commensurate with some 200 years of use.

The decanters are square in cross-section with chamfered corners and are decorated with gilding. One displays a faux label for Brandy and the other for Hollands (Gin). The shoulders of the decanters are cut and the elongated pouring rims are gilded. The gilded faux labels appear on two sides of the decanters with the intervening sides decorated with gilded fruiting vines. The bases measure 7.2 cm (2.9 inches) square and have polished out pontil marks. The decanters are 18 cm (7.2 inches) in height without the stoppers and 20.5 cm (8.2 inches) in height with the stoppers inserted. There are some chips to the bottom corners of both decanters and a slither chip running up one edge of the Hollands decanter of some 1.5 cm (1/2 inch) in length.

The stoppers are of facet-cut ball form, and are probably the originals. They are of the same colour and metal as the decanters and are decorated with gilt spots and foliage. There are the normal tiny chips out of some of the cut facets. The end of one stopper has broken off at an angle. There are no other significant chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. The gilding is rubbed around the pouring rims and the faux labels.

They are English lead glass decanters weighing in at 685 g. (~ 1 lb 8 oz) each.
