Description

This is a Georgian engraved port shoulder decanter and stopper dating from the mid to late 18th century, c1760.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base commensurate with some 250 years of use.

The decanter has a plain neck. The body of the decanter is engraved with a faux chained label for PORT above a trailing, fruiting vine and hare-bell flowers to each side. The plain base measures 9 cm (3.6 inches) in diameter. The decanter is 24.3 cm (9.7 inches) in height without the stopper and 28 cm (11.2 inches) with the stopper inserted. There are no chips, cracks, scratches or any evidence of restoration.

It weighs 734 g. (~ 1 lb. 10 oz.).

The stopper is of multi-teared ball form and is arguably contemporary with the decanter. W would normally expect to see a cut-spire stopper with a shoulder decanter such as this, and the multi-tear ball stopper is normally seen with earlier shaft and globe decanters. However Dr. Stuart shows it with the teared ball and McConnell in his book "The decanter - ancient to modern" shows other decanters of the same period with teared ball stoppers e.g. see page 113 where a contempraneous Beilby sugarloaf decanter is shown with such a stopper. It is a good fit and is possibly the original. There are no chips, cracks, scratches or any evidence of restoration.

Provenance: this decanter and stopper are shown in "Glass in Norfolk - a history of glassmaking and decoration in Norfolk" by Dr. David R. M. Stuart (1997) as Fig. 3 and is attributed to the Yarmouth, Norfolk glasshouse based on its engraving which "matches" the engraving on a named shaft and globe decanter for "The Falcon, Norwich" and that on a pair of decanters in the Norfolk Museums engraved with the legend "Gregorians". The Falcon pub in Norwich was only a few yards from the warehouse of the glassmerchant, Jonas Philips who sourced most of his glass from the Yarmouth glassworks. The Falcon and Gregorian decanters can be seen in Andy McConnell's book - "The decanter - ancient to modern" on page 99 and it is hard for us to see the connection to which Dr. Stuart alludes.
