Description

This 5 bottle Georgian silver cruet set was made by Hester Bateman and hallmarked in London 1788.

It stands firmly on 4 ball and claw feet and the stand is beautifully decorated. There is a tall handle sectioned to hold the 5 bottles and the stand is topped with a hoop handle. The stand has a wooden base and the whole piece sits solidly.

The smaller bottles are original, 2 of them have partial hallmarks including the makers mark, the third is unmarked, probably simply worn away through cleaning. The 2 taller bottles for oil or vinegar are not original. They are hallmarked for London 1791 and whilst the makers marks in both cases are partially worn bearing in mind that Hester Bateman retired in 1790, and although very similar the glass bottles are slightly different in pattern. Finally the long solid silver gilded condiment spoon has at some stage been added to the set.

So we have a Hester Bateman hallmarked silver cruet stand with 3 original bottles and 2 slightly earlier replacements. To fully reflect it being a matched set it is offered at a substantially discounted price.
