Description

This a beautiful, handmade piece of Scottish Arts & Crafts dating from the very early years of the 20th century.

The item has been made from a single piece of heavy gauge brass and has been decorated in the repousse manner - the Celtic knot motifs have been hammered into the reverse of the plate, thus giving the front side a raised or three-dimensional feel to it.

In the recess of the plate you can actually see the planishing or hammer marks where the craftsman or woman has shaped and manipulated the metal (see picture 6).

Around the circumference the brass has been simple turned over to create a sturdy rim, and obliterate any sharp edges.

At just over 22cm across the item is actually rather more compact than most plates that you see of this type - the larger types would more properly be called a 'charger', but this example is around the size of a regular dinner plate, which makes it an ideal display piece.

This smaller than usual size made me think that perhaps it may of been a church collection or alms dish.

The style and quality of this item is undeniably Scottish and has certainly originated from a crafts guild or school, this could possibly be the Glasgow School of Art or The Scottish Guild of Handicraft.

There are certain elements to the style that makes it reminiscent of the work of Margaret Gilmour.

There are no visible makers stamps or signatures to the item, which is actually very common to see on item like this from this era, even from some of the top makers.

The item will of started life as a simple plate and later had a crude copper strap added to the rear to hang it on a wall.

This strap has been heavily soldered into place, with even a few little stray splashes of solder here and there.

The item measures 22.6cm across and has a total unpacked weight of 287g.
