Description

An antique 19th Century Japanese Shakudo copper scenic stand mounted on a gilt bronze back with easel legs, typically to be used as a menu holder, held via the slit at the top (please see photos).

Exquisite quality and detailing.

The raised relief design to the fan-shaped body of the piece is of copper with the background of dark patinated shakudo. The circular scene illustrates a man tapping sap or lacquer from a large blossoming tree. The base of the stand is decorated with an intricate rope detail around the handle of the fan.

Shakudō is an alloy of gold and copper (typically 4–10% gold, 96–90% copper) which can be treated to form an indigo/black patina resembling lacquer. Unpatinated shakudō visually resembles bronze; the dark colour is induced by applying and heating a special patination formula.
