Description

This is a very nice pill box to use or to add to a collection - the piece carries full U.K hallmarks for Birmingham 1901, the year Queen Victoria passed away and her son Edward VII became King - the makers marks are stamped inside the box and are for the respected maker, Edward Souter Barnsley - the lid is part hallmarked as is normal for items such as this (see pictures 4 and 5)

The box is round in form and is made up of two halves which simplt push together to form a good seal - the lid of the box is heavily ornamented with typical Victorian / Edwardian repousee work consisting of a repeating pattern of foliage and scrolls - the lid also has a vacant cartouche which would of been suitable for a monogram - this item doesn't appear to have ever been personalised.

The inside of the box has been gilded which is not only a sign of excellent quality, it also offers protection to the silver as some substances may be corrosive to the surface (see pictures 3, 4 and 5)

As can be seen in the images, the box is plain on the underside, with the only embellishment being the stamped hallmarks.

These type of boxes are always popular as they offer a nicer solution than a cardboard box or blister pack for people who need to take regular medication - pill boxes are also highly collected as cabinet pieces - this is particularly nice example and is as usable now as it was when it was made 117 years ago.

Declaration

Century Antiques has clarified that the Antique Early Edwardian Sterling Silver Pill Box Birmingham 1901 (CA2062 / LA142879) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1901.

Condition

All round the condition of the piece is excellent - naturally, given it's almost 118 years old there are signs of use and handling commensurate with its age - the very highest point of the design show some signs of polishing, but importantly, as is often seen there are no holes in the repousee design to the top brought about by over zealous polishing - the lid closes well and the hallmarks are are little rubbed through polishing but are still clearly readable.
