Description

This beautiful Victorian sterling silver jug was made by Edward & John Barnard and hallmarked in London 1869.

It is in very good condition with no repair or damage. There are two ornate vacant cartouches but the striking and very unusual attribute is the chequered relief decoration which itself is divided into squares with different decorations.

The jug retains the original internal gilding, has a loop handle incorporating a thumbpiece and stands firmly on a stepped circular base. Hallmarks are clearly struck.

The Barnard family of silversmiths were highly regarded for their quality and this jug is a fine example.
