Description

A lovely example of a solid sterling silver mote spoon.

Mote spoons came into use in the 1730's and had a two-fold usefulness: They were used to strain tea (which was at that time a leaf) and also to clear the spout and any straining holes in the teapot which had become blocked with the tea leaves, hence the pointed end.

The sterling mark on this spoon is discernible but the rest of the hallmarks are rubbed. The silver is in very good condition and, amazingly, there is no damage to the lovely symmetrical pattern of the bowl. There are initials ('HB') on the reverse of the bowl.
