Description

A very fine William IV silver-gilt 'castle-top' vinaigrette, in its lovely original red Morocco leather velvet and silk lined box, having a die cast panel of Abbotsford House, the ancestral home of Sir Walter Scott on the lid. The curved sides with wonderful quality chased floral decoration, the sides of the lid and the base with machine turned decoration, and the original gilt interior with a magnificent pierced grille.

Blank cartouche to the underside, inscribed ‘Emma French Leeds’ in period cursive script inside the lid. Hallmarked on both lids and underside of grille. Made by the most sought after of the Birmingham silversmiths, this is as good an example as you will ever see, with many signs of the highest quality, and having more than likely spent its entire 180 years squirreled away in a drawer!

Vinaigrettes are small containers for aromatic vinegar used to disguise unpleasant odours. The sponge for the vinegar was contained beneath a pierced grille. Most were made between 1775 and 1895.
