This is a mid 18th Century antique oak and elm gateleg table, standing on slender turned legs, terminating in bun feet. The end rails are shaped and fitted with a drawer to one end. The stand is constructed in oak and the top is made of elm. It is not uncommon to find a country-made piece constructed of a mixture of native timbers.
Elm was often used for table tops as the huge girth of an elm tree provides the widest boards, therefore less joints. It is also very robust and will cope with wear and tear well.
