Description

This very interesting and attractive gourd-shaped vase is the output of Thomas Forester's Phoenix Works in Longton, Stoke-on -Trent, Staffordshire, England, the heart of the British pottery industry in the 19th century.

The vase is earthenware, painted in underglaze colours and finished in a transparent glaze. The painting shows two swallows against a vivid sunset. The back of the vase is painted with a naturalistic woodland scene. The rim and the woodland areas are finished with an application of later fired on gilt.

Both the body of the vase and the base are signed by the paintier, who we believe to be Thomas Dean. Dean worked for a number of the Staffordshire potteries including Minto, Wedgwood and Spode, and both he and his sons Ronald and Albert worked for Forester.

The base also carries the printed mark for Thomas Forester & Sons, 1891-1912. Forester is rather overshadowed in the art pottery canon by the lIkes of Minton and Wedgwood, but the earlier work of this pottery, such as this piece, certainly rivals that of those great potteries.
