Item of The Week - Small George II Period Chest on Chest

What makes a house a home? Décor? The Occupants? Furnishings? I guess we all have different perceptions on what makes a house a home.  Here at LoveAntiques.com, we believe that it’s an accumulation of all these things and more, but we can’t help but love furniture and furnishings. For this weeks ‘Item of The Week’ we have chosen a fundamental piece of furniture, which most of us will either already have, or will more than likely have a variation of.

This Small George II Period Mahogany Chest on Chest is a superb piece of furniture and for those who don’t know, it does of course come from the Chest of Drawers family, serving the exact same purpose. However, these are quite significantly larger and offer lots more storage space than your average Chest of Drawers. Put simply, it is just a Chest, on top of a Chest!

An evolution of the Coffer, Chests of Drawers quickly became a very popular choice of furniture to have in the home and still are today. They came in many different shapes and sizes, and in various forms, the ‘Chest on Chest’ being one of these forms. They have been an essential and highly practical item to have in the home for hundreds of years and are most commonly used in bedroom, but why would you want to lock away something like this where only a few select people will see it? In all its glory, this would work well in a living space, or a study perhaps?

Dating from c.1760 this Chest on Chest has withstood the test of time and is still in very good condition despite its age. It is crafted from Mahogany and boasts a rich, yet mellow patina, adding to its overall sophisticated appearance. It has two short and three long Oak lined drawers with brass handles on the upper section, whilst the base has three long Oak lined drawers; plenty of space for your belongings. It sits on shaped Ogee bracket feet.

As you would expect with a piece this age, it does display some marks and scratches, but it is still a wonderful and sturdy piece that would make a great addition to your home.

It is being sold by Jackson Yeo Antiques Ltd for £1,650
