Item of the Week - Superb Country Oak Carved Coffer c.1690

Storage, you can never have enough of it! Even with all the cupboard and drawer space in the world, it never feels like it’s enough. So what better piece of furniture to help out with your storage solutions than an Antique Coffer or as they are perhaps more commonly known as nowadays, Antique chests

Our Item of the Week is this beautifully carved Country Oak Coffer which was manufactured between 1690 – 1700.

As is the often the case with a lot of Antique furniture, the Antique Chest has evolved over the years, with its functionality changing quite significantly. The History of Antique Chests implies that it was common place to find these in the homes of rich nobles and their main purpose, aside from being a fantastic piece of furniture, was to assist in the transportation of valuables between manors.

Over time these chests developed additional functions and are now more commonly used for storage amongst other uses. Found in various locations around the home, chests can serve as coffee tables, or a standalone statement piece of furniture. When used in bedrooms they could act as a blanket box or even in a children’s bedroom, as a toy box.

This stunningly hand carved coffer is made from medium dark country oak and boasts ample storage space including a candle box. It also boasts its original hinge and back and comes with a lock & key. Its deep colour gives it a rich, warm and homely feel. It is in great condition given its age, with the odd few ‘lumps, bumps and chunks’ which undoubtedly adds to its rustic charm. Whilst probably best suited to a country cottage, there is no reason why this fantastically versatile piece of furniture wouldn’t sit well in a modern home.

It is being sold by Trade Antiques for £685
