Item of The Week - Swedish Birch Inlaid Oval Occasional Table

Occasional tables are a must in the modern-day home; without one, where would you rest your newspaper, television remotes or car keys?!  And the lovely thing about occasional tables, is that they come in all different shapes and sizes to suit everyone’s desires, whether it be big or small, circular or rectangular, wide or narrow; the options are endless. But it’s not very often you see one like this….

This Swedish Oval Occasional Table is not only practical but is simply beautiful to look at. It dates from the mid-19th Century and has so many lovely features which come together stunningly to create this spectacular and rather charming piece.

It has a Burr Birch top, on which a striking walnut inlaid diamond shaped design is displayed, strung with ebony. To compliment the sharp edges of the diamond there is a carved gothic shaped frieze all around the upper of the table. In a slight contrast, it sits on a turned, smooth looking stem tripod base with decorative feet.

This table could be used in various decors, even modern ones, as the light colour of the wood is perhaps deemed to be more modern in appearance than perhaps a darker mahogany might be, but whatever your taste, we’re sure you would agree that it would be a terrible shame to cover this table over with any vases, lamps or other such items, when it has such a wonderful design to show off.

The Dealer selling this has noted that there is a minor mark to the top of the table and a restored age split to stem base, but we think that this simply adds to the charm of this highly desirable table.

It is being sold by Debenham Antiques for £1,650
