Item of The Week - Victorian Oak Bookcase c.1880

It was after the advent of the printing press that books became mass-produced and more commonplace within the home, initially they were stored in chests or cupboards, the bookcase evolved from the cupboard. Reading has been a past time for hundreds of years, the joy of enjoying a book has transcended through the centuries, as Charles Eliot once said “books are the quietest and most constant of friends, they are the most accessible and widest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers”, so why not display them in an attractive antique bookcase.

This Victorian bookcase was made in the 19th Century and features crisp carvings, it is an open bookcase, the top opens to reveal a cupboard and it is possible to adjust the three shelves for your purpose. The intricate carvings feature oak leaves, birds and acorns, and the oak has a lovely patina. The bookcase stands at 48.5 inches and is 41.5 inches in width and it is 12 inches deep so it is possible to display a good collection of books within it.

Martlesham Antiques have verified that the bookcase was made in 1880 and it is being sold for £1,850.
