Item of The Week - William IV Rosewood Davenport Desk

If like us, you are fascinated by the evolution of furniture then you’ll love what we have chosen for this weeks Item of the week. This week we have chosen a Davenport Desk, supposedly named after Captain Davenport who was the first person believed to have commissioned this type of desk.

This style of Antique Desk is typically slim in size with drawers to the side, has a knee hole space and a writing slope with storage underneath (although these features can vary from desk to desk). It is believed to have evolved from the bureau, one of the earliest recognised styles of desk, which was essentially a chest of drawers with a writing slope on top of it. Over the years, the bureau saw a series of changes and by the mid to late 18^th century the Davenport was established.

The Davenport combines the practicality of being unobtrusive whilst having lots of storage and a neat worktop space. This would be a great addition to your home and could prove useful for all members of the family. It would be the perfect spot for sorting out utility bills and household business, whilst also serving as a great place for children to sit and do their homework.

This William IV Davenport dates from 1835 and is constructed from Rosewood. It boasts four mahogany lined drawers with original turned wooden handles and also has a charming slide-out and swivel ink-well and pen drawer. The writing slope is supported underneath by beautiful barley-twist columns. If you open up the hinged writing slope you will find further storage and a maple stationary storage well. Its overall rich patina gives it a wonderful appearance.
